The “St. Nicholas” church at Tsarevets

The church in the village of Tsarevets is one of the few entirely preserved buildings, dating from the 17th century. Though modest in size, its interior reveals to the visitor an extraordinary world of bygone days. The warm colors and the realistic style of the mural paintings conveys a feeling of unpretentiousness and intimacy. The interior is also to be noted for the one of a kind built of stones iconostasis, covered with painted decoration.

Above the very entrance of the church the so-called “the Constructive Stone” is to be seen, on which the year 1747 is marked, when some additional construction work took place. The nearby graveyard is remarkable for the large number of preserved richly decorated tombstones from that times, some of which are real masterpieces of the stone-cutting art.
